Situation:Tolu Mining required the detailed design of HV and LV distribution networks to re-establish their gold mine after it had been mothballed for 10 years, including extending the operation underground. Engenuity were engaged to attend site to assess the existing electrical infrastructure to determine what could be re-used and provide the new electrical design for the site.
Our Role:Engenuity initially conducted site inspections, testing and assessment of the existed aged infrastructure. Following this Engenuity developed a detailed design of the high voltage, low voltage, and earthing systems required to re-establish the mine and extend the operations underground. This involved the full development of detailed design documentation, and associated equipment tender reviews and recommendations. Engenuity is still to provide FAT and commissioning services later in 2025.
The OutcomeEngenuity worked together with local contractors to deliver the project, drawing on previous experience of working in PNG and making practical judgements to re-use as much equipment as possible while still delivering a robust result for operation into the future. The Tolu mine is expected to be operational later in 2025.

Situation:OTML required an upgrade of their HV feed to the site including the 132kV connection, main transformers and 33 /11kV main switchrooms. Changes to their processing requirements also meant that all mills were to be upgraded from DOL starts to HV VSDs.
Our Role:Through sister company, Nexus Engineering, Engenuity assisted with the detailed design, construction planning and commissioning of these major upgrades at Ok Tedi.  For the supply upgrade this included 2 x 75MVA transformers, 132kV switching units, 2 main HV switchrooms, with over 63 panels of HV switchgear combined, associated SCADA and remote switching systems. For the mill upgrade the same support was provided for installation of 4.2 MW VSDs on each mill drive.
The Outcome:Engenuity worked together with our sister company in PNG, local contractors and OTML personnel to deliver the project. In particular, the project location meant that experience and critical thinking had to be applied to ensure that construction could be executed considering the remote logistics and need for in-situ builds to reduce downtime. The upgrades were completed in 2018.
